Most wallet pass programs issue the card at signup, then wait for the customer to remember it exists. By the time they’re standing in your store, the card is buried 3 swipes deep in a wallet app they haven’t opened in weeks.

Make a smarter move: flip the trigger. Issue the pass the moment the customer walks into range, and it lands on the lock screen while the decision to buy is still open.

Here’s the whole setup as a single Customer Journey in Pushwoosh: a geozone entry, a wallet pass with the offer baked in, and a push notification that hands over the card link on whichever platform they’re on.

Why trigger on location, not a signup form

A wallet pass issued at signup competes with every other onboarding step: permission prompts, profile fields, an app tour nobody finishes. Most customers close the tab before the card is ever added.

Meanwhile, a pass issued on geozone entry skips that competition. No form stands between the customer and the card, and the offer is relevant to the exact 5 minutes they’re deciding whether to buy, not to whatever mood they were in when they signed up weeks ago.

🛠️

Geozones are circle or polygon geofences around a real place: a store, a terminal, a venue. Group them into a cluster, and entering any zone in that cluster fires one event your Customer Journey can use as an entry trigger.

How to build a geofenced wallet pass journey

Before you launch a geo-triggered wallet pass journey, you need 2 things: a Wallet pass template connected for Apple and/or Google, and a geozone cluster drawn around your locations. When both are ready, you can build the journey in 4 simple steps.

  1. Geozone entry

A device enters any zone in the cluster and fires the entry event (e.g., PW_GeozoneEntered). That's the journey's entry point, so you don't need to build a list or schedule a campaign.

  2. Issue the wallet pass

The journey issues an Apple or Google Wallet pass on the spot from your template. Put a live offer in one of the fields when you set up the campaign (e.g., a percentage off), and it ships baked into every pass this run issues. The card is on the customer's device before they've decided anything.

  3. Split by platform

A filter checks whether the device is iOS or Android and routes it. Apple and Google passes are different objects under the hood, so the next push has to point to the right one.

  4. Send the pass link

Each branch fires a push carrying the wallet pass link and serial number pulled straight from the pass just issued, personalized per platform. One tap, and the card is in their wallet.

💡

Pro tip: the push doesn’t need a separate template per wallet type. On the Android branch, pull google_save_link and google_serial_number from the issue-pass step; on iOS, pull apple_install_link and apple_serial_number. Each branch’s push carries the right link because the platform filter already split them.

Where geofenced wallet passes earn their keep

Best fit: retail, grocery, and QSR or coffee — anywhere a customer’s physical position near a store is itself a buying signal. The tighter the loop between “near the store” and “offer in hand,” the better it converts. It’s a weak fit for apps with no physical location to geofence.

If that’s you, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Radius matters. Same as any geo campaign: too wide, and “near the store” stops meaning anything. The pass step de-dupes reissues to the same device, but a regular who walks past daily can still re-enter the zone. Easy fix: set a cooldown on the geozone or the cluster (not on the pass step) to control how often that fires.
  2. It works even for those who don’t have your app. Because it lives in Apple or Google Wallet rather than inside your app, the offer keeps working even for people who rarely open the app. You can hand the same pass out by link or QR to reach shoppers who never installed you.
  3. Measure what pulls people in. Watch pass saves and in-store redemptions to see which locations and offers actually drive visits.

If push, email, or in-app are already live in your account, none of this is a new integration. The geozone, the pass, and the platform-split push sit on the same Customer Journey Builder canvas as everything else, aimed at the same User ID and the same segments.

FAQ

Only if you let it. Set a cooldown on the geozone (or the cluster), the same way you would for any geo-triggered campaign, so a regular who passes daily doesn't get a fresh pass on every visit.
